Colored from black to orange or red, more than two dozen species of stonefish can be found along the Oregon coast. Many species of stonefish are life-sized at about 16 inches (41 cm). Some species, such as the black stonefish, hang out in the schools, while others are solitary. Individuals of some species can live more than 100 years. Stonefish can be caught in piers, but most are caught by boat in deeper marine waters. Charter fleets at several Oregon ports offer full-day redfish fishing trips. Sea salmon season is announced in May, and fishing is generally better in July and August, as migratory coho salmon and Chinook feeder salmon are readily available. Many seafood seasons are quota-based and can close early, so it`s important to check the fishing status before fishing.
